Single ceramic tile removal - already damaged (not by me) - situated beneath small overhang of shelf above kitchen bench. I have a replacement tile which will need to be cut to size, but that's the next problem. How is it possible to remove this one tile without doing too much damage to adjacent tiles or backing board?

If ya dont want to do too much damage mate, drill a few holes in close proximity to the centre of the tile, ( put a bit masking tape on the drill bit about 6mm from the tip) stop drilling when the tape just touches the tile face, that way you wont drill through the subtrate. Once you have drilled a few holes just pick out the pieces with a screw driver or something similar, then from the centre, break out the rest of the tile

a nail or screw to break the tile into pieces then a screwdriver or old wood chisel to get the bits out..

use a grout removal tool ( or a broken hacksaw blade ) to remove the grout first prevents it from lifting the adjacent tiles..
