The problem is that the garage is quite narrow. The brick pillar is right where the car door opens, making it impossible to get out of all but the smallest of cars. Can all or some of this pillar be removed without having an effect on the wall, or is there something that can be attached to the wall giving the same effect. The garage has a flat roof btw.

Cheers

Sorry, just re-read my post and its maybe not to clear. The brick pillar is a square section built into the wall about 50% along its length. Someone told me that it provides support incase a gust of wind hits the wall side on. The wall in question is adjacent to the house with a small passage running between the two.

Anyone help?

gusting wind is a peculiar thing and can create suction as well as pressure. leave the garage door open in a storm and your wall will become particularly vulnerable.

even with the pillars!

if the walls are tied into the roof, in such a way as to strengthen the walls then it may be possible.

the problem is, how well is the pillar tied into the main wall?

in removing the pillar you could inflict a fair bit of damage to the main run. you will be able to see how it is tied in from the outside, as the bond will be broken by the tied-in courses.

Get a smaller car.

It sounds like the garage is single leaf brick, so these pillars are added for strength. It would probably hold up without it, but if it collapses and kills the kids - guess who they'll be blaming?
