I have removed a gas fireplace, brick surround and hearth and have been left with a scruffy looking hole in the wall with a random arrangement of bricks packing the back of it.

We don't want to have a fire there but would rather have a little feature like a bowl of stones or something and then put up a nice surround, (it's going to be our bedroom). Any ideas for how I could make the back and sides of the hole look neater? One suggestion I've had is to build a plasterboard or timber box to sit in the hole which could then be plastered over. Not sure what to do about a hearth either. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

the box is a good idea  make a hearth out of that laminate tile effect flooring
