hi, hope someone can help. i'm getting a builder in to do some minor work. part of it is to knock an alcove out & then replaster up. There are two plug sockets & a wallmounted spot light which he is going to remove then plaster over.

Can any old builder do this or does he need to have an electrician who is qualified for this? (ie does it fall under certifiable work for this "p" work thing). cheers

Its not notifiable, however you should make sure he does it properly, the ring stays complete and is properly joined, the feed to the light is properly removed, or at least terminated in a sensible way, rather than just plastered over

thanks for that. i guess the only way to check is to confirm how he plans on doing it before i let him loose?

Yeah, or do it yourself before you let him loose

the big problem is joining the cables (assuming theese sockets are on the ring), best way is to go back to the next sockets along the ring but this may be too disruptive.

second best way is joining with terminal block in a backbox with a blanking plate but if you do this then imo you may as well keep the sockets.

the final option is to crimp and heatshrink but thats a little tricky and you only really get once chance to get it right, also while crimps are supposed to be more permanent than screw terminals they do still fail sometimes.

also do you have any idea where this wall light is fed from?
