I've helped friends remove walls before, but the one in my house is load bearing. I know I will have to place columns of some sort in. Are there suggestions on the route to take to make sure there are adequate supports during this process?

You should also bear in mind the construction of your ground floor because it will be no use propping your upstairs floor and walls and standing the props on a timber ground floor. You may have to lift a few boards and ensure your props go through until they are on solid ground. Common sense really but it's often overlooked.
