In the corner of my kitchen I have a short section of wall which extends from the main wall to around the height and width of the counter top. I believe there was originally a built-in cupboard in the corner and one of the previous owners must have demolished it leaving only this small bit behind.

I would like to get rid of it as it is too high and I would like to have a full-length kitchen worktop. However I was wondering if the bricks are interleaved with the main wall how I would go about demolishing it without damaging the main wall?

If its as you say and internal cupboard made out of brick then the chances are it will be tied in the the other wall.
chain drill the brick/blocks as close to the join as possible. then a lump hammer and bolster chisel will do the rest.

That looks too thin to be bricks, so probably soft 3" clinker block

Hit the tied brick/block on the top and side with a wide bolster chisel right at the wall junction and it will crack and snap.

Get the sparks in to fit a few more wall sockets while you're at it.
