Hi all,

quick question about removing (or, more accurately, shortening) a wall in a flat I've just bought.

The floor plan is as follows:

I intend to open up the living room by moving the bathroom door to the right by a few feet, as follows:

I'd like to hear how you would go about doing this (assuming it's not a supporting wall). Sledge hammer, then refurb with plaster board?

Many thanks for any comments - I'm relatively DIY-aware, but have never done anything like this before

:D

looks fairly straight forward, on paper anyway.

if the wall is there for partition purposes only, and so long as there aren't any ornate mouldings, skirtings or covings to deal with, then you could get a job like this knocked off for around £500+.

Thanks for the comments - it's a period Victorian building, so there is ornate cornicing, etc.

It's a very good point - something I hadn't considered :D

Perhaps it would be better to leave the wall as ruining a period feature would surely devalue the property more than removing the wall would increase it.

doorways don't have to be opened up all the way to the ceiling, but can be left with a running nib in order to leave the uppermost part of the wall unmolested. particularly in scenarios like yours.

Yeah, that's a good point as well...

Thanks a lot noseall!

sorry to bring back this thread JLW (and also for posting off-topic) - can I ask what software you used for your floor plans?

I'm looking for something myself that's not too pricey!

Simon
