There is an unused thermostat in my house which I assume was in use on a previous heating system but appears now not to serve any purpose. I want to remove this, however, there are still wires running to it and I am therefore unsure exactly how to test and subsequently remove.

Also, in a separate room there is a swith (with red neon on/off indicator)which also does not work and also seems to serve no purpose anymore. This I would also like to remove.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction on how to test / remove these safely?

You need a multimeter to be sure of a dead circuit. Like this one for a tenner. It should come with instructions. You need to test for voltage between any of the connections in the thermostat and in the other outlet. Chances are, they are both to do with the central heating, but it could be anything. You also need to locate the other end of the cable to be sure it can't be turned on again.

Do you have a combi boiler now? Any cables unused nearby?

If you have tested that the installation is dead, you can do a continuity check to see that you have two ends of the same cable. This is normally done by twisting two cores together and testing between them at the other end.

This all involves a bit of logic really.
