I know this is solvable with a hacksaw, but I'm just wondering whether there's another way to remove the handle when the lifter is impossibly jammed onto the square metal rod and just won't budge..

May be possible to drain the cistern and apply lubricant like wd40 to loosen the metal rod, and/or the screw that connects it to the rod.

Or set the jaws of an adjustable spanner slightly wider than the width of the rod and try to gently separate the two, a bit like you would remove an olive stuck on a pipe, but be careful not to smash the cistern

If not, slimline hacksaws can be purchased that can fit in the smaller space available, or, again if there is space a metal cutting jigsaw blade in a cordless jigsaw.

A metal blade on a multi tool might also work.
