removing tiles

I am having my bathroom retiled and am taking the old tiles off myself. The tiles are coming off easily but the cement adhesive is sticking to the wall and I cannot get it off without digging holes in the plaster.
Is there an easy way of doing this? Or should I leave it for the tiler and just pay him even more money than I am already? It is a small bathroom.
