I have just moved into a flat that I will be decorating.
In the bedroom there are 2 bedside wall lamps wired into the mains, each with the own switch next to the lamp.
I want to remove these and the switches and fill in the holes ready for painting.
Question is, what do I do with the wiring once the lamps are removed?
Do the wires actually need disconnecting at their source to make them safe?

Any help appreciated..

You can sink a box into the wall terminate the wires safety inside and put a blanking plate on the top so that it remains visible and people will know that there are cables there. If you don't think that will look good, You will need to disconnect the wires as you suggest and if possible remove them.

I guess a blank plate over the switch would be ok as its going to be behind the bed.

But what about the wires that remain sticking out the wall where the lamps were - should I be able to pull these down through the wall into the box where the switch is?

Thanks

I was referring to sinking a box and putting a blanking plate where the wires for the lights were. The switch should already have a box.

If you can disconnect the cable at the switch and pull it out great. But beware the live will come from the switch, but the neutral might not, there may be a junction box somewhere.

It will also depend how the cable was installed. If it's clipped to the wall & then plastered over, you probably won't get it out without damaging the plaster. If it's in conduit, or covered by capping you might.

It might just be easier to add some new lights
