The bonnet has not been opened for several months and now I find that it is jammed.

The pull will pull quite hard but does not unlock the bonnet.

Any suggestions for opening it ?

Tony

There are two hold down catches on these, one in each front corner.
Get someone to press both bonnet corners down, while you pull the release handle.
John :)

and if that still doesnt work, you might be able to gain access from underneath, pig of a job but on some cars you can

Burnerman, thanks for that suggestion which worked!

Now that I can access the engine compartment and have started the engine two further problems have been identified.

Brake fluid was very low and topped up but the pedal needs to be pumped many times to get some resistance. Sounds as if there may be a small leak and air has got into the system and will need bleeding the air out?

The central UNLOCK button works but the door key does not lock/unlock anything. The 15A fuse is OK.

Any thoughts?

Tony

you may find that pointing the key towards the rear view mirror from outside the drivers door window works.

...on mine the key has never worked from more than 3 feet away from the car and it always has to have clear line of site to the sensor by the rear view mirror.

...or is the remote broken or has a flat battery? - does the little red light show when you press the button (my spare key is broke)

I was referring to the actual metal key!

The remote does turn off the alarm so is working too.

Regarding the brakes Tony, the rear self adjuster mechanisms on these are worse then useless...they work on a ratchet principle which is meant to automatically turn - but never does!
If you have a look inside the rear drums then you'll see what I mean - there is a toothed wheel which can be manually turned with a screwdriver a few clicks at a time. This will restore the handbrake feel and reduce the necessity to pump the brake pedal.
Regarding the locking - Renault changed their system from an infra red sensor to radio about this time....the receiving sensor is usually above the rear view mirror and its best to renew this - the actual decoder is elsewhere on the car.

My key fob is the radio type.

However, neither the metal key nor the radio fob are operating the central locking/unlocking since the car was not used for many months. The 15A fuse for the door locks is OK and the central emergency door unlock button works.

I also have a problem with the tailgate which is firmly locked and will not unlock with the metal key. I was wondering if the central unlock might unlock that but until thats sorted I will not know if that might happen.

i used to run renaults and on 2 different cars there was a dry solder within the remote fob that needed doing.

Bonnet catches are a pain in th 4r5e on Lagunas. Getting it to close was always the problem with mine. Give it a really good oil up on all the cables and catches while its open.

My friend got a bonnet latch on his passenger side that would not release. I got overwhelmed on how he got around it..

Option 1
Pull the release handle back. as far as it can be pulled.. Extend the seatbelt down to the footwall. Hook it over the handle. Take up the slack in the seatbelt ratchet. Do this until the handle is stretched.
On the passenger side of the bonnet's leading edge press it down, this would release the catch.

Option 2
Get under underneath the front of the car. Use a torch; shine it up till the top of the radiator. Pull down the bonnet release cable running next to the top of the radiator. Check the cable when the bonnet is open then adjust it to take up any slack, of course you have to remove the seat belt first by undoing the 7mm bolt on the passenger side clamp behind the headlight. Use pliers in pulling the cable and pushing the clamp into the puller even as retightening the bolt. Try to shed grease to all the moving auto parts, this will then open the bonnet within an inch or two of the handle's travel. …but he ended up having the grill removed. And some clips were broken.
