I need to re-render patches of exposed brick work and then re-plaster an internal party wall (18msq) to a standard suitable for papering. I am going to do the job myself because the quotes I have had so far are just out of my price range, my kids need food and I need beer. I've never done plastering before but I'm competent at most things in life and I am up for thre challenge. Anyway, I've removed the old render and plaster where it is loose and hollow sounding, the old render is very dry and has ash, coal, straw and other things in it even a piece of rope (?) perhaps the guy who did the work was thinking of hanging himself. So what should I use to render the brick work before giving a skim coat?
