I have recently had an exterior wall rendered. Beforehand I was told this would be a two day job, one for the scratch coat and the other to apply the finishing coat. When the builder came, he said he'd do it in one day. He made up a strong mix (extra cement) but with no lime. Layed on one coat and scratched it. In the afternoon he layed on the final coat before the first coat had set.
I didn't question him as I thought he must know what he's doing. But now I'm a little concerned after first being told it's a two day job. Can anyone tell me if I'm going to have problems?

It's always better to scratch one day and double up another day, but as Noseall said, it wouldn't normally cause any problems to do it all the same day..... As long as any wall surface has sufficient suction to allow the build up of 2 coats in one go, that's the main thing, otherwise, 2 coats of render applied the same day to a wall with little or no suction would be too much/heavy, and could cause the render to slump and crack. I'm sure you'll have no problems with your job, but you were right to ask what others thought.

Roughcaster.
