Rendering washed away by heavy rain

Today I had a new UPVC door and frame fitted. When the old door frame was removed all the rendering was taken with it, and the fitters rendered the frame for me. Soon after they left the torrential downpoor began and washed away the rendering, mainly on one side. I will ask for the rendering to be re-done however due to the time of year I cannot be sure that it will not begin to rain heavily straight afterwards the second time around.

Does anyone have any experience in protecting rendering from heavy rain once it has been done what should i use? I was thinking of duct-taping a polythene strip to the upvc frame and wall to protect the rendering until it dries enough to withstand another downpoor.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Any small job of rendering can normally be covered up quickly in the event rain. Once the rain has started to cause severe damage,it is better to take it off immediately, rather than chisel it off the next day. Light damage early on can be sorted out,or if you can, just scratch it and get it later or another day. I have seen many a job ruined by covering up in a panic, with loose and flapping covers or polythene causing more damage than the rain. Most "covering up" is made up as you go along and you use whatever you have available. Sometimes you can get lucky and render or roughcast even in the rain if it's hitting the other side of the house. It's hard to plan a good dry day. It's just luck. If your caught roughcasting/rendering half way down a gable end and the heavens open up directly onto the wall, the only answer is to either scrape it all off or turn the hose onto it and wash it all off, but this happens very rarely.

Roughcaster.
