We have a 1870s house with solid walls. These had been covered with plasterboard & had become damp. We have quotes from a local plasterer, who's bee highly recommended and who's suggested we use Renderlite as an alternative to lime. Having read up on it, it seems this isn't recommended as it has some cement content & won't allow for movement. Is this the case? The outside of the wall has & will have breathable masonry paint on. Any thoughts? I know lime is cheaper but will take longer labour wise.

Renderlite floating coat and Renderlite finish are pretty expensive coatings - plus there has been criticism of their use. Lazy plasterers like it because its light to mix and spread.

Sand and lime mix at 3:1 or 4:1 with a lime skim (you can buy the finish in tubs but it too is expensive) will do a first class job.
It will take longer.

First you must prep the walls back to bare brick, and discover and deal with all causes of damp. (If you like, come back here for help.)

Is the outer wall surface bare brick or render?
