Hi all,

A few years back I bought a Strong TNT satellite box so that we could watch the Tour de France in French.

Unfortunately the decrypting cards only last for four years and mine has now expired so I need to replace it.

It seems you can buy them in France for € 15, but they're about £40 on Amazon or my satellite box supplier will sell me one for £75. Seems a lot to me when you can get them in France for so little.

Does anyone here know how I can get one at the French price?

Regards

Jever

France?

... or at least a French web reseller.

What you're seeing with the Amazon and your existing UK-based(?) satellite reseller is the added costs associated with them buying from French wholesalers/retailers so you don't have to, and what they feel is a justified markup for them providing that service. There's also some percentage to cover the cost of sales such as Amazon's fees and covering returns etc. IOW, they're taking away the worry for you in exchange for some money. That's how business works.

With postage and currency conversion costs, the total if you were to buy direct can't be much more than £20. That's hardly breaking the bank. Why not approach a French web seller directly?

I've tried the French websites, but they only appear to accept addresses in France.

Bizarre, given that the card is in support of a product that broadcast by satellite to most of the globe.

But that's a very French way of doing things....

Regional restrictions apply in lots of different circumstances. Radio broadcasters might run a webcasting service. The web is available all over the world. But the rights license limits the broadcaster to say UK ISPs only. You have the same with Netflix. Stuff available on the US site is blocked to UK ISPs.

My guess is there are regional licensing agreements in place that then limit where the TNT cards can be used. That feeds back up the chain to where they can be supplied from; hence your discovery that UK pricing is different to France.
