Hi everyone

My front garden metal gate is a little rusty in parts, but I like the style and would like to smarten it up. Can you offer some advice on the steps and products I'll need? It's white.

Many thanks

SB

Providing the rust isn't too bad, the simplest product is Hammerite Direct to Rust gloss - readily available in several colours, including white.

Remove as much rust and flaking paint as possible, wash with soapy water, rinse and allow to dry. Apply said product ensuring you stir it frequently. Job done.

Otherwise you will be cleaning rust, applying primer (such as zinc phosphate), waiting for it to dry, then doing two topcoats and getting a bad back thrown in for free - all with the nosy neighbours watching!!

Thanks MrHelpful - you're living up to your name!

The rust isn't too bad so will give that Hammerite a go

Cheers

Be sure to sand the gate down all over first.

Wouldn't hurt to give the rusty areas a coat of Hammerite (beware there are smooth or hammered versions - you probably want smooth), or a suitable rust killer primer before you do the whole gate. All helps to stop the rust.

Apply two coats of Hammerite if possible, particularly if you have a very different colour to cover.
