The outside of the house has been professionally painted previously with good quality materials. The time has come to repair the few places that need it. There are some spots which will need taking back to the wood and primer sealing then 2 coats of undercoat and gloss. OK.

The vast majority of the paint work is very sound and will need a new gloss coat for cosmetic reasons only.

The question is- can I just give the sound woodwork a couple of gloss coats or should I use a layer of undercoat (or two) on it also (which seems a waste of time effort and money) before glossing.

I want to do a good job so that it lasts another six to ten years.

Probably better to give it a coat of undercoat, then a coat of gloss. If you gloss on gloss all the time it can start to peel off as it has nothing to adhere to. Use undercoat mixed to the same colour of the gloss if its not white, this will help it cover better.
