We have a 100 year old house with the original wooden bay windows at the front of the property. Most of the other windows in the house have been replaced piece meal over the years but we always avoided replacing the front bays as we wanted to maintain the original frontage as much as possible.

We are currently having the front of the house painted and we were aware that there was some rot in the upstairs bay but now that the painter has got in close and personal it is apparent that fairly major repairs/replacement is needed to the bottom rail of the upper bay window.

The painter has suggested we get a joiner/carpenter to splice in some new wood as required and we are willing to look at this possibility but wonder if we should just give in and have the bay replaced with upvc?

We are probably looking at downsizing an a couple of years so I kind of resent paying out for a new window but I guess on the other hand it will make the house a bit more saleable.

Is repairing the existing frame a realistic option or will it be throwing good money after bad?

If we do want to get it repaired will any joiner/carpenter be up for doing it or do we need to look for someone who specialises in window repairs?

Thanks

Will it? Original features are worth something in Cheshire...

Eminently.

Photos would help, but wood is wood. Any joiner should be able to manage this...

Thanks for the reply, I would like to agree that original features are desirable but in my experience the first thing people do when they buy a house is rip out the wooden frames and bung in plastic ones - something which we have resisted till now.

Anyway I have found a local company that offer a Resin Repair service (see pictures) which looks like it might suit our situation. I have asked for a quote

Those don't look like original windows. But still cheaper to replace the wood than get new windows.

Sorry, those aren't our windows - they are pictures from the contractor's website showing before and after shots of his Resin Repair service
