Hello,

I've had some bricks removed from.a chimney alcove to make it wider. Unfortunately the cut wasn't that clean in places as it was close to the edge of one row of bricks, so the surface is very irregular in places, with gaps 2 inches deep.

I need to patch this up to make it level for tiles. Should this be patched with cement render or plaster? It seems onecoat render or bonding plaster can be applied to a maximum of 25mm deep.

Any of the above will be fine, you can do in more than one fill if deep or line with cement board before tiling.
