Repairing holes in door

I want to replace our old door furniture but would like to use a different size/shape.

Can anyone tell me how to make a good job of filling in and painting the screw holes left behind by the old fittings.

Not had much success with this in the past, always seem to be left with a mark on the door which is plain to see is an old screw hole.

The doors are the standard B&Q type paper internal panelled doors.
