Repairing kitchen worktop behind sink

My worktop behind the sink is rotting. It has become detached from the sink and from the tiles. The water can seep through easily. Also, it has some holes which I am covering with black duct tape.
I have also used a lot of silicone to fill the gap between the worktop and titles. The silicone gets dirty and difficult to clean.

What can I do to repair the back of the worktop - behind the sink, so the water does not seep through and also remains intact and aesthetically pleasing?

The only option I have been told is to install a new sink that covers the full width of the worktop - all the way from the tiles to the front.
Is there any alternative?

Buy an upstand of something like corian/quartz/compact laminate and silicone it in place. If it's thick enough to accept a profile (cut a strip out of it) on the back edge to go over that nasty bit sticking out at the bottom, great. If it isn't, then get rid of that nasty sticking out bit at the bottom and put the upstand in place, siliconed to the sink. You need to ensure that the upstand is thick enough to touch the top of the back edge of the sink, then for best seal run a bead of silicone on the back edge of the sink and place the upstand down on top of it, then rotate it into place. Use silicone shaper tools to clean up the joint


Use a colour matched silicone that is darker than white, keep the silicone dry, and clean it occasionally with HG mould spray or similar; it won't go black/mouldy

Also, take note of how the water gets there in the first place; if you're reaching for the taps with wet hands and flicking water all over, adopt a different strategy for getting excess water off your hands before reaching for the taps ..

There is no repair.

The only option I have been told is to install a new sink that covers the full width of the worktop - all the way from the tiles to the front.

That could be done but some of the tiles will need to be removed at the back as that style of sink as a small upstand at the back which tiles go down to.

Is there any alternative?

From the images, I cannot see a problem with the laminated chipboard worktop.

The discolouration on the silicone suggests that too much water is left sitting when you wash up.
