Replace a ceiling rose

Difficult to see how there can ever be a "must".

1. It's "only" (tricky to phrase, as they are important) the wiring regs that require you to use the new colours, and they are not a legal requirement, nor are they mandated by the Building Regulations.

2. What is a legal requirement is that "reasonable provision shall be made in the design and installation of electrical installations in order to protect persons operating, maintaining or altering the installations from fire or injury". When it comes to extending, altering or maintaining an existing red/black installation I think it's more reasonable, and safer, to carry on using red/black than arbitrarily deciding to mix the colours.

IMO, all of the current regulations that we work too have different implications for DIY installations and commercial installations and its hard for me to wear two hats when replying to some posts.

Commercial installers must use the new colours because although 7671 is not a legal document, failing to comply with it may have legal implications which could end with a prosecution instigated by a third party.

So in the context of this forum you maybe right but in my world unfortunately must applies, sometimes for all the wrong reasons.

I think we all agree on that and to have one switch wire in a house with brown sleeve and the rest with red would be even dafter.

But from my point of view, If I modified an existing circuit on behalf of Maidstone Council and used red identifiers, what would happen if the consultant on inspection says it should be brown? I could argue until I was blue in face but at the end of the day it should be brown because that’s now the colour of a live conductor.

Oh happy days
