Hi, I have a missing shower tile. The problem is that there is no drywall or cement backerboard immediately behind it.

I would prefer not to have to replace the whole wall. Any suggestions?

If the surrounding plasterboard is in good condition and not water damaged??
You could patch the area up, but you would require some more plasterboard (it is not cement board that you picture is displaying)
You would also need so dry-wall adhesive.
You would need to cut a piece of board that can be slotted into the hole and adhesive applied on back tiled wall and the board held in place until it has stuck. Once set you can stick a bit more board over hole to bring it level to existing.

What happened, why the hole in the wall? Is it due to water damage? Are the surrounding tiles secure?
Why not post pics of the whole shower esp that wall?

I do not know why the tile fell off. I do not know why underneath there is a hole. The surrounding tiles are secure. I will try to post pics of the larger area later.

Could there have been a soap dish or similar stuck there at some time? There seems to be some silicone traces around the area.
Do you have a replacement tile?
John :)

Yes, I remember now, there was a soap dish there. I did finally get a replacement tile. The problem is that wherever I find instructions for replacing it, it assumes that that the drywall or cement backerboard is intact.

If it was a stick-on soap dish then simply stick on a similar sized new soap dish - no tile or tile backing needed?

lol. Now I feel stupid, I didn't even think of that. Let me look into it.

I'd guess getting a replacement tile would be the difficult bit......but you've sorted that.
What do you want to do? Either way, I'd start by trimming the old backing material away, and then hunting around for some timber that would pass through the hole prior to fixing it with grab adhesive - maybe two tile lengths and just less than the tile height would suffice.....with a finger sized hole in the centre!

No worries - I'm a professional builder & once I had two carpenters searching for the internal crawl space hatch. I stood at the threshold on a mat well, and eventually had one guy cut a new access - Doh! the original access was under my feet in the mat well. Go figure.

Looking st the picture more closely, there seems to be some timber present behind the hole, could that be used to attach, possible packing out to form a secure fixing point.

Don't forget to ensure adequate waterproofing to stop any water getting in that hole. last thing you would want is rotten beams.
