Replace dial thermostat with portable one.

I have a honeywell dial thermostat on the landing. It controls the whole upstairs. House built 11 years ago.

We need the thermostat in our bedroom, the easiest way I thought was to replace the dial stat with a portable one that I can put in our bedroom.

I looked online and the closest to what I need, I think is a dt4r with receiver. Am I right?

Will the wiring be a straight swap over?

Any thoughts appreciated

Wiring won't be straight swap as it depends how the Honeywell on the landing is powered, as the receiver will need a permanent live and permanent neutral. Why do you need it in the bedroom?

Are there no Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRV's) you can turn down? You need to be careful of not allowing the rooms to be cold as you risk damp and mould.

we did something similar 3 years back, we had a wired thermostat in the hall so effectively heating whole house - we only want the 3 main rooms downstairs heated.

bought a wireless one and it was simple to wire in, a receiver fits next to the controller where the boiler is and the thermostat goes where ever we want
it was this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334223678120 (only £29 3 years ago) works well and no longer feel guilty turning the heating up.

the radiators throuht the rest of house have TRVs so we just leave them set at 2 - and the 3 main rooms downstairs set to max
typical cold winters day, 3 main rooms 23c rest of house 15c - never liked a heated bedroom, prefer blankets

If all the rooms get to the temp we want in our bedroom, that wouldn't be an issue. Here is a pic of the wiring behind the stat.

That maybe work, but as I said it depends if it's permanent live and neutral. Do you have a combi boiler or conventional? If conventional then receiver could do with going near wiring center, in place of programmer or set heating to permanently on and utilise the wiring there for the receiver.

It matters not that the existing stat has live feeds, as it can be disconnected at the junction box and replace there with a receiver from whichever remote unit you choose. When you have your remote stat, just remember not to hold it in your hand or place iton the window sill in the sunshine, as one of my customers once demonstrated how it did not warm their conservatory.

That looks as if it should be a straight forward swap, for the dt4r receiver.

I don't even use my stat, or timer its turned up and if I am cold I press it on for 1 2 or 3 hours. All radiators apart from loo and bathroom have TRVs for not so frequently used rooms.

So that stat is on the wall outside of where the water tank is and the programmable timer that sets the time for the hot water tank and the rads.

As suggested The DT4R receiver needs power, your current thermostat cabling doesn't provide that, so that would be taken away and it would need to be connected into the CH system's wiring centre where it can be supplied with 240V. Unless the current stat location is close to the wiring centre and a new 240V cable could be run to it from there.

You'd be better off replacing your programmer rather than your thermostat for a dual channel receiver. Then you can control the hot water and heating through the wireless thermostat.
