You'd be better off replacing your programmer rather than your thermostat for a dual channel receiver. Then you can control the hot water and heating through the wireless thermostat.

I was just thinking the same. Might crack it open and see what we are dealing with

So it getting power every now and then when the program comes on wouldn't be enough?

No - the way the current thermostat works just now depends on what boiler it is. Some boiler use a 240v Switched live (SL), other use what's called a 0 volt or dry contact.

Chances are you have a SL so one cable would go live when the programmer calls for CH heat. Could it work like that, possibly but the receiver would probably have to go through a start up routine every time and it's not really how it's designed to work.

As suggested though, you could replace it for a programmable thermostat, it's receiver would run both CH and HW and give you a remote thermostat too. Something like a HIVE or similar. Then you lose the programmer and replace it with the receiver. Ideally that has a hub that connected to the internet making it controllable remotely too but the thermostat and receiver can be used without a hub.

Thanks everyone. So this is what I have next to the water tank. It controls the water tank hot water and the upstairs rads. I only have 1 thermostat upstairs and that is the one in this thread.

I assume that stat has a wire coming into this controller. If that's right, and I swapped this out for maybe something like this, would that then do what i want? If so, which wire do I need to ditch?

No, the programmer sends a live out to the existing thermostat, which in turn sends a switch live back to the motorised valve. You can bridge existing thermostat out at the wiring center, at the thermostat or just turn up to maximum as then the Esi would take over. Esi have a decent following by some engineers on this site.

Link live and switched live together, or place both in the same terminal which would be 1 or 3 (both wires being used, just terminal 1 or 3 to house both).
