We just had a water meter fitted out in the pavement and the pvc valve out there is a quarter turn valve. I noticed our flow rate improved , probably because the new fittings are less restrictive. I wandered if I replaced my main stopcock whether that would improve the flow even more ? I was thinking of a full bore ball valve. Has anybody experience of these as the main stopcock. Also how are they in seizing up in a hard water area ?

As far as I know there is actually some rule that means there does need to be an actual stopcock.

However I think many will done what you are suggesting as the thinking would be; it's capable of being operated by any person who is likely to use it, it's designed and installed in such a way that it can adequately control the flow of water under all foreseeable conditions of use.
