WOW! Thats a blast from my childhood! 
They don't take batteries if I remember correctly. I think they work on the induction principle of a moving coil for the needle to swing.
I think it must be more than 10 years ago because I have lived in Suffolk for the past 10 and it was certainly back in Liverpool when I got them. Might be closer to 20 years.
If I get chance at the weekend I will dig them out and have a look. Might even be able to post a few pics.
