Old 2 way switch has 2 red wires connected to terminal 1, 1 connect to the common terminal and 3 black wires which don’t really go anywhere. New dimmer switch has L1, L2 and ~ arrow.

Grateful if someone would confirm how new dimmer switch should be connected.

There is a sticky note at the top of this forum which describes this. Take a look then come back if it makes no sense (though, think twice about doing it if it makes no sense at all)

Assuming nothing is connected to L2 on your old switch:
Connect the red wire (from COM) onto the ~ on the dimmer
Connect the other red wire (from L1) onto L1 on the dimmer
Leave the black wires in their terminal as they are neutrals.
