hi, is replacing a mortice lock as simple as unscrewing the plate and removing the old one, then putting in the new one....or is it more complicated than that??

i have a mortice lock on a inner porch door that has no key, i thought i might change the lock.

any advice welcomed

The only complication is replacing your old one with one that is of the same size as the prepared slots.

Remove the handle first, then the plate on the edge of the door, then if there are screws holding the body of the lock take them out. If it is not loose then use a screwdriver through the handle slots to lever it out.

Use it as a template to buy a new 5 lever. If it is not too old you mightjust get a straight like for like replacement.

If you can't find one of the same size then you will need some simple woodworking skills to replace it.

If you know a friendly locksmith he could make you a new key for your old lock. Most others will want to sell you a new lock and bill you for all the labour.

Give it a go - a lock with no key is pointless. ;)

If you get one the same then it is a straight replacement. The only thing you may have to do is reverse the latchbolt to suit your door if it is left or right-hand hung

Size wise, there are typically two sizes - 2 1/2 or 3" - this describes the distance from the edge of the door to the handle bar.

It may be an idea to take your you existing one and take it o the shop to get one the same.

The edge plate may be slightly different, so you may have to either use a chisel to widen the recess, or fill around the new one if smaller. The actual mortice recess should be the same

In terms of security, its questionable whether you need the highest security lock for an inner porch door. It's unlikely to be picked or drilled. More likely to be kicked or levered. So the weak point is normally the frame and keep housing
