Replacing a Potterton dial thermostat to a programmable one

Hi

We currently have a dial Potterton thermostat and I am wanting to replace it with a programable one.

I am wondering if anyone knows how many wires the existing thermostat may have? I have tried to remove the existing one to see but it is being very stubborn and I am concerned that I may break it and then be without heating until the weekend (the first time I will be able to get to a shop to purchase a replacement)

Wondering if I will need a battery powered thermostat.
