Hi, This may have been covered at some stage but I am new and only just discovered this place.
Lets get down to bizz.
My old folks have a wooden framed CU that recently caught fire, well almost.
What I want to know Is can the CU be replaced as a DIY project without infringing on the new leglislation jan 2005.
I was a sparky a few years ago, when it went to 14th ed regs, tinkered around a bit sibce but I am no longer knowledgeable about the regs, I know they were getting silly then so god knows what they are like now.
What I am trying to do is save them ££££'s by installing the CU myself.

under part P you cannot do the work. altho if your confident youll be able to do it SAFELY, then you started it last year.

It all depends on where you are. You can still do it quite legally up here in Scotland.

Why? How?

Not unless you either started it last year and finish it before April, or you notify Building Control in advance.

A source of endless fascination and arguments.... A copy of the latest OSG would be a good investment.

Mmm. I wonder what else needs doing, though....

If it was a choice between waiting for the fire insurance to pay for rebuilding the whole house, or breaking the building regs and replacing the CU yourself, then I know exactly which I would do.

I think this exactly demonstrates one very serious problem with part P. A repair delayed is a fire started.

I'm not saying he shouldn't DIH - only that maybe there's more to be done than just a CU....
