The internal doors will be replaced but will retain the door frames as they are solid and need to be stripped and repainted.

So should doors be hung after the flooring goes down or before?

Also some of the doors open into the room and some open towards the wall. What is the correct way to have them open?

Alter and rehang your doors after the new flooring is down - it's less work

Traditional way to hang doors is so that they open into a room, but retain the modesty of the room's occupants. In other words when you open the door the room should not be immediately visible, but should be hinged so that the contents are revealed gradually as the door is opened

So you can have doors opening to the wall to create impression of more space?

Opening towards the wall downstairs and towards the room upstairs - is that common?

Towards the wall would be because it's a bedroom and who would want guests staring into the room when the missus leaves the room leaving you bed with the duvet half pulled off? In point of fact in a Victorian house most rooms would be done like that

As it happens it also works to reduce draughts when the door is opened as well as limit heat loss
