So, a built-up area with a reliable supply, then? Not an overhead supply to a small cluster of houses and a neighbour switching a big load on and off?

If you use those compact fluorescents (cheap from supermarkets) they are more tolerant of voltage fluctuations and don't have filaments that might suffer from shaking about.

Do you think your light fittings and switches look old or amateurishly connected?

Secure has got his (Osram) hat on, hip hip hip hooray............

A. Use good quality lamps!

B. With a good multimeter, check the supply voltage - over voltage can shorten lamp life.

C. Make sure your lamps are not rated to 230VAC.

D. Poor connections can also sometimes shorten lamp life.
