Replacing Gas Fire with Electric?

1. Are electric fires good value for money and how can I spot a good and economical performer?

All electric fires are equally efficient. 1Kw of rating always delivers a full 1Kw of heat irrespective of the make or model.

Gas is 1/3 to 1/4 the price per Kw, but gas fires are far from efficient. How inefficient I have no figure for.

Another one to watch- mains gas fires generally deliver more usable heat per £ than electric fires but they do generate a lot of water vapour (as well as CO2 and potentially CO). Older houses tended to leak air like sieves so no problems with gas/water vapour buildup, modern sealed houses may give different results
