Hi,

I am looking to replace a plug socket.

However, the wires that I can see in the old configuration do not match any of the diagrams included in the new plug socket box (when do they ever...).

Old configuration:

New plug socket:

Closest diagram provided in box:

Any help much appreciated!

The instruction diagram is for a system with a High Integrity earth system. In simple terms that is an Earth supplied via the cable and a separate earth, called the functional earth, taken around the sockets by a separate wire.

On the existing socket the red wires will be in a terminal marked L

They both go into the terminal on the new socket that is marked L

Likewise the black wires should be in the terminal marked N

The bare wires with green / yellow sleeves are the Earth wires,

The two earth wires from the cables should go to the same terminal marked E on the new socket. The earth wire from the terminal in the metal box should be also be connected an Earth terminal on the socket.

So the earthing is wired slightly differently now to how it was before:

Now earth from both cables go directly into the plug socket (which is then wired to the earth on the wall

Previously, cable one went into the wall and then into the plug socket and cable two went into the plug socket.

Is this correct? Should wiring ever be changed like this?

Thanks,
Notting
