im replacing old single plug sockets with new doubles , but when removing the old ones I found the wiring is hard piped into the box . how do I remove the back box without decimating the plaster board
 
Is it plaster or plasterboard?
It sounds like you have a conduit system, this are generally black metallic round tubes, and a fixing nut will by inside the back box that will be fixed to the male thread of the conduit.
This can be undone and the box removed and replaced, but it is very unlikely, you will get away without causing some damage to the fabric of your wall.

Do you know the age and condition of the cable within the conduit?
