It sounds like you have a conduit system, this are generally black metallic round tubes, and a fixing nut will by inside the back box that will be fixed to the male thread of the conduit.
This can be undone and the box removed and replaced, but it is very unlikely, you will get away without causing some damage to the fabric of your wall.
Do you know the age and condition of the cable within the conduit?

Yes, I know he did, as you can see from the post where I quoted him. 
It's the SOCKETS you are replacing. The PLUGS will stay the same.
You don't know that - he might be treating himself to some fancy new ones.
