Im in the process off buying my first house, just waiting to complete at the moment. The wall in question is the kitchen wall, and this was originally the outside wall. The house has since had an extension on the back, so this wall now seperates the kitchen from the dining room (extension), but when the extension was done, the outside window was left in place rather than opening it up or putting a door in. As a result, you would have to walk the full circle of the house to go from the kitchen to the dining room!

Anyway, my question is, providing that the top of the window is high enough, and the width of the window is wide enough in respect of the chosen door to be put in, would it be as simple as removing the window and any material below it to allow the door/frame to be put in? (i.e. relying on the lintel as the support). Or would it be a case of taking the whole wall out and using a different support/beam, and building it back up from scratch? Or neither?

Im pretty much an ametuer with all this as its my first house, so go easy on me! I'm probably looking to get a proffessional in to do the work, depending on whats involved, but i just thought id come here for some advice on whats involved, potential costs, persmission needed etc so that im 1 step ahead when we move in. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Yes it is that simple!

Provided there is say 813mm in width and 2020mm in height then a standard ( 2'- 6" x 6'- 6") door and casing will fit.

You will need to decide which way the door is to open to determine where to locate the casing, unless you decide to fully line the opening.

Light switching may need altering.

The only 'banana skin' could be that the floor levels vary greatly over a short distance.

Thanks for your reply noseall. Thats sort of good news, just need to get in there now and take some measurements hoping i can get away with just sticking a regular size door and caseing in there.
