Thank you for those replies; it's certainly given me something to think about.
The bungalow was being used as a dental surgery and there are 2 consumer units in a position that will be in the middle of the property when the extension is built. I have identified where most of the feeds go and will need to make some minor alterations in that area but hope that I can leave things there rather any major alterations - hence I favour providing a new link (about 15 metres) with it's own fuse box.
These replies have given me some better knowledge to at least discuss things more meaningfully with the electrician.
