We have rcently moved house and throughout the year have been replacing the old radiators. no problems there but i have found that the return flow valve on the immersion tank was only open about 1 turn .Should this valve be fully open or closed?. The system has been drained down and flushed with sentinel a couple of times .It takes a long time now to heat up the hot water system taking into account the cold weather. We intend to have the boiler replaced as and when it is affordable but for now we have to make do with the 21 years old Baxi which seems to be working ok.

It has been shut down so the Hot Water cylinder does not grab all the heat when both HW and CH are on.

Does the HW cylinder have an integral polystyrene casing or a loose insulating jacket?

Presumably you mean when both CH and HW are on at the same time. Was it OK in the summer when you were heating HW only? If so try opening the valve a quarter turn at a time and see what happens. If no improvement, set the valve back to its original point as there must be another reason.

have returned the valve to roughly its original position and will monitor it for a couple of days to see how things go. thanks for all and any help. With a bit of luck it will be back to "normal" .
