Hello Forum,

Sometimes the car will judder when in reverse or not work at all, like it is in neutral. The Shifter is firmly in R. Sometimes it will work if D is selected again and the car is driven forward slightly.

My first instinct is to check the oil level in the gearbox. There is a dipstick for the gearbox, but how should the level be checked. With the car cold or after a short drive with the oil upto temperature and should the engine be off or on?

If not oil level then what might it be?

Many Thanks

Peter

The usual way is to have the engine running and warm, and then feel free to read the dipstick.
The only thing you can really do is to change the oil and the internal filter, which means taking the gearbox sump pan off.
