Hi,

I have just moved into a end of terrace built in ~1870 with a cellar. I’m after advice on how to go about repairing the walls. I have chipped away at a lost of loose material and would like to know next steps before painting. I am getting a little overwhelmed with reading about waterproofing, sealing, getting the right render to make sure I don’t end up with a damp problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Ben

Tell us how it is ventilated.

Is the house made of stone, with lime mortar?

Or is it brick?

Do the cellar walls have lime plaster on them?

What's the floor?

Hi John,

Thanks for your message. There’s an egress window down there for ventilation. The wall in the picture is made of flint but I’m not sure what kind of plaster is on there. The floor is brick.

Thanks,
Ben

You need ventilation on at least two sides, to give a throughflow of air. Is the window constantly open? Are there airbricks or other vents? You have to expect a cellar to be damp.
