I am just about to get quotes to rewire completely my 1950s semi. What questions should I be asking?

What is a reasonable quote?

How long should it take?

I personally would want to know

whether they can issue the required paperwork etc on completion

Whether there work will conform to Part p requirements etc
And will they be sorting that out

Can they show you any confirmation, they are competent domestic installers and that they can certify there own work.

Whether there work will conform to 16th or 17th regs
And if concerned do they have insurance or back up.

It is worth asking if the price will be cheaper if you move furniture, take up old carpets, make good any walls after chasing etc - even maybe carry out the chasing work if you feel like saving a few pounds.I know that I would be happy to let the homeowner do his own chasing out

Size of house? 3 bed 1950s semi
Are you living there currently? yes
Number of socket outlets?
Number of light fittings?
Cooker/shower/heating?
Any outdoor wiring (e.g. garage/shed?)

hallway - 1 socket; 1 ceiling light
lounge - 3 sockets; 2 ceiling light & 1 wall light
kitchen - 5 sockets, including cooker; 1 ceiling
landing - 1 ceiling light
bed 1-3 socket; 1 ceiling light
bed2-2 sockets; 1 ceiling light
bed3-1 socket; 1 ceiling light
bathroom- shower and downlighters done 2 years ago.
gas central heating

There is a conservatory and the garage has been converted into a study in the past 5 years, so wiring there should be fine.

What confused us is that a new consumer unit with RCD was put in before we bought the house, so we thought it had been rewired. It was only when we checked behind the sockets that the wiring in the original part of the house was still rubber.

There has been some work done to it but we just want it up to spec.

You need at least three quotes in order to compare. Make sure each quote is like-for-like and either a certificate is included or cost of LABC taken into consideration.
