Ironic choice of adjective there. Could this spell the end of Top Gear? The BBC don't like this sort of thing. Anyone remember Michael Lush? Took Noel a long time to recover from that one. (although it's another tragedy that he did).

Someone else totalled one of my cars. I happened to be driving it. (As I said in another of todays posts - you can be the most careful driver on the road and something bad can still happen)

I haven't totalled any cars. One of them died of natural causes - its gearbox caved in, no fault of mine.

And I dont drive like a prat. I just like to have a bit of fun on the roads - when its safe and when i'm not hurting / annoying anyone else! I dont take unessecary risks and I dont put people in danger. Ever.

Oh, and i'm 21 in just over a month.

He is "serious but stable" in hospital.

Even when it looks like they are pratting about on that show I'm pretty sure it's all under controlled conditions - they just like to edit in a way that makes it look a bit risky (like the car wash fire that was supposedly rigged etc) - there's no way the Beeb would let them carry on that way - I bet off camera there is a permanent safety team on standby etc.

ITV news last night - tried to use the whole thing as a Beeb bashing exercise - idiots - had Mike SMith on there who refused to condem it - the **** newsreader who did that stupid Island thing was a bit stumped.

chilluk, your analogy is quite nonsensical. It might hold a little water if your theoretical tradespersons were unqualified and risk taking buffoons eg sparky working on an install without isolating supply, or (non) gas fitter searching for leaks with his trusty Zippo etc, etc.. Or if Hammond had been injured whilst taking his advanced driving test or teaching young drivers the importance of adhering to the speed limits at all times. But the fact of the matter is that he and Clarkson are a pair of irresponsible plonkers who constantly knock any safety initiatives or environmental motoring developments. It's a good thing that no innocent third parties were involved in this silly stunt.

Fair play I'll have to admit to being wrong on that one - but I still doubt it was a "silly stunt" and rather a highly organised and well run event - which is probably the only reason he is alive now. Yes he knew the risks of the "job" up front but it was an accident - I doubt he was pratting about whilst driving it and from first sight looks like he did a fairly good job of wiping a lot of the speed off the thing as he felt it lose control - I'm willing to bet something failed (tyre/compnent etc) that caused it originally.

My point was - don't believe the edit of the show that makes it all look like a laugh - sure they have fun, but I bet that fun is constantly tempered by a health and safety team at every shoot - yes their job inherently carries some danger - as do a lot - as long as all rules and safety procedures are adhered to when doing any job then I don't see the need for all the "he deserved it" and "only a matter of time" posts.

How many motor racing fans gave the same reaction when Senna was killed?

Heard an interview with Richard Noble in which he said that driving over 250mph does strange things to your body and the key to driving at those speeds is experience, that you have to be able to think quickly. It was an insight from someone who knows.

Hopefully Richard Hammond will make a full recovery, but it doesn't appear that the right advice from the right people was either sought or heeded. Sure people want to push the boundaries, but there are ways to do this whilst minimising the risks. As you've said Pip, not right for a newby!

I hope lessons are learnt.

If someone rolled a car of that type at 300mph - they'd be picking up body bits the size of chicken drumsticks. I'd say 60mph would be more accurate.
