Hi,can anyone help?when I switch on boiler(cold) in morning it will try starting, fire and cut out(not lockout)after 2secs or so and keep doing the same thing for about 15mins and will then fire and work no problem for rest of day, next day same,I took photocell out,put bright LED torch to it and it fires no problem, would appreciate any suggestions, thanks, This problem is only in morning when cold

Hi Oilhead thanks for your reply, was away for a few days,I have 2 filters on supply line, one at tank outlet(checked and cleaned) and one just before flexihose on boiler (which I replaced) same result. It is like the flame is not bright enough on initial start in the mornings for the photocell, like I said if I trick the photocell by exposing it to daylight on ignition,it will start no problem,if I leave it running for a few minutes like that and put the photocell back in place it will start and run all day with no problem until initial start up in the morning, would appreciate any suggestions,I`m going to get new nozzle tomorrow or am I wasting my time? Ps There is about 4ft head pressure in tank, had this problem since before the cold spell.

I remember several years ago having a similar problem with a Riello burner where it kept repeating the ignition cycle many times before it eventually settled down and kept running. No red light or lockout. If I remember correctly it turned out to be a fault with the controller.

Thanks for your thoughts, hope its not that, but if it has be changed so be it,I`ll try easier options first, thank you

Hopefully it will be something straightforward and cheap to fix but I think the main pointer here for you is the lack of lockout. Any failure of the start sequence should lock out the burner and that lockout is a function of the controller. Anyway good luck with your troubleshooting.

It is lighting for a few secs, will continue doing this for several minutes, then stay on and run as normal all day and evening, next morning, when cold, same issue

If your boiler was set up 'lean' in warmer weather, it may now be too lean to provide a valid flame until it warms a little, and the photocell will initiate reignition. Without a full combustion analysis to eliminate this it is difficult to comment further

Thanks for your help oilhead, reignition, that is exactly whats happening, but this never happened in the last cold spell,my air ratio setting is 2.75,done a oil pressure test(cold) and there is a slight fluctuation in the reading of 8.5-9.5bar,I wonder would that cause an invalid flame,if it is air in the fuel line I can`t figure how it is getting in,many thanks again for your help.

Air damper settings specified in any manuals are next to useless. Settings need to be made specifically to a burner, ideally with an analyser, once all oil pressures have been verified. The old fashioned way of doing this was to set to 'smoke' and then back it off a little but this is a time consuming operation.
I see from the preceding posts, there is no mention of the fuel you are using. If 35 sec oil rather than kerosene is the fuel, there are other factors to consider.

Personally the only time Ive seen a pump delivery pressure fluctuate like that is when it is purging air after the fuel supply has been re-connected after maintenance.

Thanks to everyone for their help,!st I am burning Kero, and the damper settings were set by the installation fitter using an analyser etc.I think that my problem is air in system at start up.where or why I am getting air I honestly cannot figure out.I plan to look at that tomorrow
