Ring main, lighting.

Hi All,

I've got to go round to a friends house later, to try to help him to get his lighting fixed.

He has removed a ceiling light fitting without marking how the wires were connected, and they are apparently just hanging freely. What wires should there be and how should they be connected?

its not a ring main, you will need to have a multimeter, and look in the sticky and or wiki, find the relevant drawing and print it

Whether or not the circuit is described by electricians as a ring main I need to try to sort it out so if anyone can answer the question I would be grateful.

Firstly you won't find a ring main inside a domestic house and you almost certainly won't find a ring final circuit being used for lighting. Now that he have that cleared up I can get on with telling you how no-one can really answer your questions because we are not psychics.

You may have 1 cable at the light or you may have 2 or 3. You may have correctly labelled cores or you may not. It may be twin & earth or it could be singles etc. etc.

What I can tell you is that you will probably need a multimeter which you can get for about a tenner and you'll need some labels or permanent markers to identify the cores if necessary. Also get some green & yellow sleeving, as well as some red or brown sleeving depending on the age of the wiring.

forgetting to note the connections on a ceiling rose is a very common mistake. luckily most people only make it once.
