Hello all,

Currently in the process of getting a kitchen fitted.

For fitting washing machine and dishwasher, the fitter has requested a preference for attaching these two ring main sockets to the internal side wall of base unit cupboards (using an adjacent base unit in each case, as space is limited in each base unit housing the appliance).

I had been expecting the electrician I'm getting in to put them onto the walls and access them from a hole in the cupboard backs. The fitter is of the opinion that this is untidy having large holes cut out.

Is mounting them inside base units acceptable or is this a no-no?

TIA

So you want someone on here who has never seen the job to comment as to if a registered electrician who has seen the job and weighed up pros and cons is wrong.
If you really think it's wrong lets see some pictures.
It is normal to provide a means to isolate washing machines and the like without the need to withdraw them so if for example the weights become lose you can switch it off without getting too near to a bouncing washing machine. But there are no regulations to say you must do this. And at the end of the day you get what you pay for.

Nothing at all wrong in placing them in the cupboards. Infact, you may consider it is actually more compliant than having them on the wall with a small access hole. Think about access to the socket for maintenance/fault finding ;)

Thanks for the URL. I did do a quick search originally, but the post I found was 2006 and didn't see any others. I wasn't sure if things had changed with recent updates so posted again.

Sorry - re-read the post, I wasn't clear. The fitter expressed the opinion about the sockets - I've not spoken to the electrician yet (since his original quote). I was just after a general opinion from the forum first.
Unfortunately no pics yet, as empty kitchen.

From my point of view, it would be easier for the electrician to complete his work with them mounted on the walls, then he can certify his work and finish his job. Otherwise he would need to come back and finish the installation after the fitter has done the fitting. Given the fitter is being paid to put the appliances in place etc, I would like him to finish this.

However, Lectrician makes a very good point.

Ok, think I need to speak to the electrician and see what he's happy with and maybe there's a chance he can come in to finish off when the fitter is in and has these units done.

Thanks for the feedback
