Hi,

I'm a bit of an amateur here so this is no doubt a silly question. I am simply trying to connect a ceiling light to the mains. There seems to be 2 ring mains. Please see picture attached but I thought that using this connector junction box I could simply combine the 2 live and neutral ring mains in one socket and then stick the lights live cable into the opposite

The fuse tripped out on the breaker. I thin ki need to feed one of the neutral cables in with the live to make this work?

2 reds together 1 black to live 1 black neutral.

You need to mark 1 black as live but you'll need a tester for that.

What are you connecting to it the flex looks thin?

Yeah, its really poor wiring from the ceiling light. Cheap. Although the light was NOT cheap.

OK, so I need to take one of the lives frm the ceiling and connect one of the black neutrals opposite in in the junction? But I just need to test which black is designated live with a tester?

To be clear, leave the reds alone.

One is the permanent live to the fitting, the other is the permanent live to the switch. The blacks, one is the neutral to the fitting, the other is the switched live from the switch to the fitting, this one should have a red/brown marker on it as Pete said.

Where are your earth wires?

I found one of these and decided it would be easier. Earth is now, I hope, terminated correctly as well. All tested and works well although it's on a dimmer switch and that doesn't work, but presumably that could be the actual bulbs?

The earths should have green and yellow sleeving over them.

Switch off the power and move the red from your lamp into the middle with the other reds. If the light comes on and stays on when you switch power back on, then that black is the neutral and the other one is the switched live that need red tape/sleeving on it. If it doesn't come on at all, then that black is the switched live.

Yep, I've put the tape on them now. Thanks everyone!
