If I use 18mm, 8x4 chipboard, ripped to workable sizes to use as loft flooring, is there any reason why it might be weaker than 18mm T&G chipboard flooring? Is there anything I could do to support the butted edges (where they don't meet over joists) in the absence of T&G's?

Cheers. :D

You have to align the butted ends over a joist otherwise the floor will be weak at these locations. If your joists don't match then you either cut the flooring length ways to fit or install cross joists at the required centre spans.

The TaG is made to a different density ie stronger for flooring grade.

Cheers, folks!

So, 18mm T&G flooring is water/damp resistant and stronger than its sheet equivilent? Also less work....

Hmm... sold on T&G flooring then!

Thought it might work out cheaper/easier to use sheet but, guess not!

Thanks. :D

No, standard T&G loft board is not moister resitant I work for the company that makes loft board and its not moister resitant if you want this go to a builders merchant and ask for moister resistant flooring grade chipboard it should have a green colour. I think you will find that this comes in big sheets only.Big All stated you need moister resistant for lofts if this were the case we would not be making bog standard T&G loft board.
